Schouwen-duiveland
Sturdy dunes on the sea-side, solid dikes along the Oosterschelde and Grevelingen and mighty clouds in the sky. These impart a peculiar charm and appeal to the former island in the Zeeland delta.
The centuries look down upon us in towns and villages, most of them dating back to the 12th and 13th century. Like a jewel, Dreischor with its preser-vation order, is embedded in a typical agricultural area between the Grevelingen and the Oosterschelde. Dreischor, rich in cultural history and nature, ranks as the most beautiful churchring village in Zeeland.

Birds and ponds Centuries old is the battle against the water: reclamation and dike bursts succeed each other. Because of the reclamation of Noordgouwe in 1374, the island of Dreischor became one with Schouwen. The floods of 1953 which caused the death of 531 people left deep scars. Recovery followed. The disaster also caused permanent changes. At Dreischor a natural area developed: the Dijkwater, over 100 ha. of nature. Also worth visiting is the RANA-nature park. This park opened in 1998 (1 ha) and has 1000 m2 of natural garden with ponds and marshland where in summer over 10 kinds of water lilies flower. A heart for Dreischor The people of Dreischor love their surroundings. Together with the council and council workers they spend much time on the maintenance of their village, their gardens, lawns and flower boxes. During the summer a number of private gardens are open to visitors. Volunteers organize an open-garden-weekend once a year. Participation in 'Entente Florale' has only been possible, thanks to the initiative, dedication and involvement of volunteers. Their efforts were the conclusive element to the success in the year 2000: the golden medal and the recognition of the Greenest Village of the Netherlands! | ![]() |

Picturesque Colourful and hospitable. Greens close by everywhere in the village. Owing to the unique character and the effort of the inhabitants the village draws holiday makers from home and abroad. The many flower boxes and colourful lawns make a splendid décor with the old façade of the Ring. Here, too, one finds the shoeing shed or travaille where horses were shoed from 1888 onwards and which is still used on special occasions. Also the 'Adriaans Church', built between 1340 and 1470, is worth visiting. The sepulchral vault of the squires of Dreischor is inside the Church. At the corner of the Molenweg and the Blindeweg stands the mill 'Aeolus', fully restored, which dates from 1739. It's name means 'God of the Wind'. The regional and agricultural museum 'Goemanszorg' is also worth visiting. The museum is situated in a farm dating from the 16th century, which has been restored and furnished in the style of the early 20th century. In the old barn you'll find a wide range of agricultural implements, crafts and tools. The museum is run by volunteers. The farmyard is full of traditional plants and tall stemmed fruit trees. | so serene, brought in Schouwen a jury to its feet.
